Approximately 100 interested farmers accepted the invitation to visit the calf pen of the Steffens familiy in Krummhörn and were provided with a lot of information about the new building and the farmer's experiences.
After increasing the number of dairy cows from 65 to 95, some of the calves were housed in different stables. This quickly turned out to be inefficient in terms of labour economics.
The family decided to invest in a new calf barn in which all the calves could be housed together. In addition to a good stable climate, the distance to the cowshed was also important in order to protect the calves from pathogens. The barn has 3 group pens, whereby the first 2 for the milk drinking calves are equipped with 2 drinking stations. The Urban Alma Pro feeding machine with a 12" touchscreen was installed this year and also feeds the calves in the individual housings with warm milk in the first week after the colostrum by the milk withdrawal tap.
